Augmented reality: Virtual Changing Room

"Augmented reality allows the customer to select a garment off the rack without having to try it on physically," according to the creator of the Virtual Fitting Room, AR Door.

A new augmented reality fitting room has installed in Moscow's Top Shop. This device allows customers to try on the clothes without naked and even try on the clothes that going to release soon.

Virtual changing room is getting more popular in nowadays. With a device, Microsoft Kinect, which scan buyer with full body motion with the equipped Kinect camera. Buyer stands infront of the device, and she/he will able to see her/himself in the screen, buyer pose as the outline of body that projected in the screen therefore the device could detect the body sizes of the buyer. After that , a 3D peice of clothing is projected in the screen which follow the buyer's body. Kinect camera that sense and the motion of the buyer. It's not touch screen base but it's hand motion ,buyer can uses their hands and reach to the icon which shows in the screen to switch the new clothes. Buyer can simply moving their hands or arms to the left or right to switch garments. Besides, buyer could also screen shoot of their virtual clothing in the screen.

This concept has apply in others online retailer. However, the uses of Microsoft's Xbox 360 console so that buyer could turn their body around and the clothing will turn with them.

Resource :

A new shopping application called Fashionista has also use something similar concept, available at the site Tobi.com from Zugara and Rich Relevance, that brings augmented reality motion capture. It's an online retailer that allowed buyer to test up the clothes that they added in to the cart in the virtual fitting room. With motion capture interface, buyer should print the marker down and hold it to the nice position which fits the buyer's body and release the marker when it is in a satisfy position. Same concept with the TopShop, buyer can move their arms to the icon for switching another clothes. Other than that, buyer can like or dislike the clothes by moving their arm in to the like or dislike button. Buyer can take a photo of herself and save it or share on Facebook.

However, it's quite trouble with using the marker because it's easy to get the wrong location of the buyer's body position as it is only given 3 seconds.

http://www.ideabounty.com/blog/post/2516/

The concept doesn't only use for garments but also accessories.

Then, I found another example, the Boutique Accessaries that using the same concept too but no need the marker to locate the nice position.

Another example that I found is the F&F Virtual Fitting Room by Metail. It's an online retailer that allows user upload their portrait and creates a virtual 3D body in the fitting room for them.  However, user need to move the points in the correct position and enter the measurement of the height, weight, waistline and so on, in order to make a similar face and body shape. By having the virtual 3D body , user could change their hair style and clothes to see whether it's fits them. From that, I found this is more concrete compare with the 3 examples above.

I found this concept is more like a fashion game that usually for kids to play.  :p

In conclusion, from the examples that showed above, we know that in nowadays, Virtual Fitting Room is a trend that helps the market of online retailer increase as it's getting more consumers. As Mr Benoff said "The Webcam Social Shopper is an application that turns online clothes shopping into a fun, interactive and inherently social experience" .

Indeed, it's interactive between the device and human that consumers could try out a virtual clothes through the webcam and share on their social network such as Facebook to get some feedbacks from their friends or family before they going to buy.

Daniel Feiler, director of communications for eBay Asia Pacific, said consumers would buy almost anything online if given the right level of information.

He said, "Augmented reality is another tool helping retailers to give their customers even greater confidence when shopping online," From that, although the virtual fitting room is not real but something that close to reality. It's a good way to getting more customers to trust and feel more confidence on their website.

With this media, it can be part of promote fashion. However ,I see that the virtual clothes somehow in the standard size when it projected with the customer. What if the customer with a much more horizontal body, will it shows bigger size of the virtual clothes ? However, through out the video that I showed above , I see that women posing with confidence in front of the webcam. Therefore, confidence is needed other than beauty and sexy when women portrayed in fashion media.

History of China women's wear

When we think of China fashion, the first idea comes out in our mind is Cheungsam. Cheungsam in Mandrin word Qipao that is a classic Chinese garment for women. The Qipao which means Manchu banner robe , it's originates from Manchu dress of the Qing dynasty.

Image taken from : http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/hsc/evrev/cheungsam.htm
The Cheungsam which can be made from fabric , with two pieces of cloth either long or short sleeves , the cut follow the form of woman's body which shows out the slim and slenderness.

Women with Cheungsam that could qualify the beautifulness of the shape of body and movement of walk. As the image above, woman wearing Cheungsam could shows out the grace and elegance and a little sexiness on the legs at the split end of the cloth.

However, the political, economic and social will affect how women fashion is the era.

I found a article about the evolution of Chinese women's dress and appearance. Inside the article has noted "clothing and appearance not only can reflect the identity of gender, but also can reflect a given economic, culture, political and social system".

Therefore, in the previous time 1950s in China destiny, women has no right to stand up and talk but they are under control by their father and hushband. Around that time, no matter the age or sex, women dressed the "Mao green" that all people dressed up the same color and work as equal as the men.

Image taken from : http://www.chinahush.com/2010/10/04/from-1900-to-2010-variation-of-chinese-woman-fashion/

Annie Lee noted that the love and beauty always supplement each other. When love disappears in people’s life, beauty turns evil. In that time, judging on appearance is forbidden, everyone doesn't care of their looking but they do care about whether they can work. Perhaps, war in that time has diminished the beautiful image of women.

Fortunately, in the later period of 1980s-1990s, women fashion became better. Women has the freedoms of what to wear ,they can dress up smartly as copies of Hong Kong, Japan and Korea . As Xiaolan Wang noted the Chinese women depend on media very much in choosing their dress style and clothes. From that, media or commercial advertising has affect every women's minds of the ideal of dressing and stylish. However, women fashion in China becoming more modern and more toward to Western style.

History of women portrayed in media (Western country)

Image taken from : http://www.foliomag.com/2007/heavy-fall-fashion-magazines-claim-page-weight-records#.Udv5RD4pbdI
The way of women are represented on television, film, advertisement, magazine and so on is pretty dismal. Women can no longer escape the words of beauty and sexy when portrayed in any media.

However, I found the history of western country about how women portrayed in fashion media throughout the century.

Since 1890s, the ideal image of women all over the United States was being thin.

Image taken from :http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/general-article/eleanor-fashion/

At the beginning of 1900s, thinness was becoming a style as women start to has interested in athletic and physician field to perceive body weight as a science which calorie counting and keeping trace of weight.
Image taken from : http://www.etsy.com/listing/104525205/vintage-photo-2-views-1900-fashion-woman

However in 1920s, around the time of World War I , women as they call "flapper" portrayed in still very thin but with a younger and more boyish style such as short hair, flattened breast and small waist instead of sophisticated and feminine image. I think this flapper style that could protect women during the world war.

Image taken from : http://doloresmonet.hubpages.com/hub/WomensFashionsofthe1920-FlappersandtheJazz-Age

When comes to 1930s, the image of flapper gradually decrease but women tried to achieve a fuller breasts and slender waist.

Image taken from : http://www.pastreunited.com/id191.html

Shortly after World War II, women started to promote "New Look" which women needed corsets, girdles and diets to achieve a thinner waist. By 1940s and 1950s, women were wearing the girdles and push-up bras to increase their breast line so that they look more attractive and slender.

Image taken from : http://www.pastreunited.com/id164.html
By 1960s,  a model known as Twiggy was skinnest model that she did not wear any garments and diet to achieve her look. Women started to have a standard body like Twiggy, they ate diet pills and dieting.

In 1970s, women still kept their thinness but in more healthy way.

Image taken from : http://11even.net/tag/1970s/
In 1980s and 1990s, women feminine looks and achievement expanded. It started to included new age variables, ethnicities and accomplishments. However, in the advertising world, women still keep the beauty as young, thin, white and flawless.

Image taken from : http://eveylun.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/empowered-and-energetic-women-of-the-1980s/

Moreover, in 1990s until today, the ideal of body was very slim and large breasted.

Image taken from : http://www.jannesvintage.com/acatalog/fashion-icons.html

Throughout the century from 1890s until today , we can see that women's ideal body are becoming more slim with large breast. Thinnest is the icon of beauty, while large breast is the icon of sexy. As I mentioned in the beginning that women couldn't escape the words of beauty and sexy.

Fashion, based media? (Exploring)

This post might be not so related to topic, but I call it an "exploring" post.

Fashion,  the meaning I found in Dictionary.com

- a prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing, etc.: the latest fashion in dresses.

- conventional usage in dress, manners, etc., especially of polite society, or conformity to it: thedictates of fashion; to be out of fashion.

- manner; way; mode: in a warlike fashion.

- the make or form of anything: He liked the fashion of the simple, sturdy furniture.

- a kind; sort: All fashions of people make up the world.

Resources: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fashion

However, fashion is a trend that everybody practices it not only for women but also men. Fashion is a style of dressing, something mix and match between clothes and accessories that to perform more fashionable. Sometimes, fashion can reveal on the personalities of the person, how the people's behavior, different dressing that could bring out different message.

Image taken from : http://racheng.net/2012/12/the-art-of-mix-and-match.html

For instance, I found an interesting news published by Daniel Bates it's about "How what a woman wears can reveal more than she ever intended about her personality."

This article is about getting off of fashion ruts, however ,inside has some interesting points such as women who wearing wearing too much jewelry that could be an attempt to tell others you are rich, but actually implies that you are having money problems, other such as wearing short skirt could be an attention seeker, wearing high heels are less intelligent but giving confidence as they can be look same tall as men.

What is fashion based media?

In my own definition of fashion based on media is , fashion nowadays can be promote based on different media such as advertisement, magazines, newspaper, or event social media such as Facebook, Instagram and so on.

Image taken from :http://about.hm.com/AboutSection/en/news/newsroom/news.html/en/FMU_2012_March.html

At the same time, fashion based media can be use to promote their own brand, spreading their own brand so one they get famous ,they can get more consumers to buy their own product .

However, social media is the newest muse for fashion as it has more opportunity to evolve platform used by the fashion industry to generate discussion, brand recognition, and improve consumer relations through interactivity and networking. (Hillary Preece , 2012)

As social media is a rapid way to promote fashion, as they could also get feedbacks from the consumers, they could know their consumers well. The model plays an essential roles in any fashion media because model could brings out the mood of the brand itself and to attract more buyers.

For example, the owner of LOFT Ann Taylor has her new product with a new pair of pants worn by a skinny model in the Facebook page. However, by looking the model,  she got complaint from the commenters as one said the outfits that only suit with certain height and skinny people.  Therefore, she changed and posting severals new photos of employees that wearing the same pants but in size of 2 to 12. From that they get a good respond as one woman wrote that is a fabulous idea.

The Daria Shualy , a former fashion editor who launched a website Sense of Fashion said "The whole idea is to create a closeness between customers and designers, there is something about fashion that comes across as inaccessible. That’s all changing. Today consumers are expecting direct access and a say."

In fact, the social media is a greatest tool that can draw closer between the retailer and consumer as they easily get what consumer really needs so that they can improve it and boost their sales.

JFK : Ask not what your country can do for you

Last lecture, we are asked to groups in 4 (Jeremy, Gerry , Estee and I) and prepare a 15 minutes of presentation on a speech given in the 20th Century. Our groups have chosen a speech by John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the title is "Ask not what your country can do for you."

Here is the videos of JFK Inaugural Address:

Part 1

Part 2

A full speech can be view on : http://www.bartleby.com/124/pres56.html

The speech delivered by JFK at his inauguration in Washington on the 20th January 1961.

Based on our research, who is John Fitzgerald Kennedy?

  • He is the 35th United States President
  • Elected as the youngest candidate, and became the second youngest president after Theodore roosevelt
  • First Roman Catholic president
  • Peace Corps, helped underdeveloped countries in education, healthcare, and construction.
  • Proposed a program of Apollo Project, "Space Race"
  • Assassinated 22nd November 1963
Where are the speech given?

  • The speech was given in U.S Capitol Building, Washington D.C.
What are they giving the speech on?
  • This is the one of the greatest speeches in 20th-century American public address.
  • Aim to unify the nation and provide a vision for the future. As he said "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure survival and the success of liberty."
  • It emphasized differences between the United States and its enemies, and outlined the specific responsibilities and obligations of the United States and its citizens. As in the phrase, "To that world assembly of sovereign states, the United Nations, our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace, we renew our pledge of support- to prevent it from becoming merely a forum for invective, to strengthen its shield of the new and the weak, and to enlarge the area in which its writ may run."
  • Created a bolder vision for American foreign policy, a vision that raised the stakes of the cold war competition and foreshadowed decades of diplomatic, economic, and even military action to support and defend freedom and liberty around the world. He said "And, if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavour - not a new balance of power, but a new world of law - where the strong are just, and the weak secure, and the peace preserved."
Resources : http://archive.vod.umd.edu/internat/jfk1961int.htm

Why are they giving the speech?
  • To comfort his audience by minimizing the danger when American people were growing increasingly fearful of a long, drawn-out cold war at that time
  • To communicate and to reach out to many different audiences .Examples: “To those old allies…To those new states…To those people in the huts and villages…To our sister republics south of the border…To that world assembly of sovereign states…to those nations who would make themselves our adversary.”
  • To shift the responsibility for the present and, ultimately, the future of the nation to the young generation. “Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans…”
  • To convince and reassure the people that he knows what he is doing and what he is getting into.
  • To bring unity to the nation and the world .Examples: "Let both side..."
Resources : http://apes16.edublogs.org/2009/09/24/jfks-inaugural-address/

How was the speech delivered?

- Consistent
- Forceful, persuasive
- Inspiring
- Slowly & deliberately
- Boston Accent

Antithesis

-Two opposite are used in the same sentence.
Short and precise
"Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate"
"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"

Anaphora

- Repetition of words in the same sentence.
The use of anaphora is to emphasize multiple times the importance that Kennedy is putting on engaging with many audiences around the nation and the world (the former example), and to create unity within the nation and the world as a whole (the latter).

Parallelism

-Similarity of structure in pair of series of related words, phrases or clauses.
“All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days; nor in the life of this administration.”

Hortative sentence

-Encourage. Create a bond between him and the audience.
“let us" "let both side"

Imperative sentence

-Commanding. Leave a lasting impact on the audience.
“ask" "ask not"

Why is it considered by many to be a great speech?
  • Kennedy motivated Americans to defend freedom and democracy and introduced a new era of change with his tactics for presidency, while promoting patriotism and international support as well.
  • The speech not only united Americans, but also non-Americans to fight against poverty, disease, and war around the world.
  • Fight for war. but not war of destruction but the war against poverty & freedom. Inspired americans to stick together to help the country.
How did you feel about the speech?
  • "I remember feeling very invigorated by it," Birch says. "Feeling at the end of the speech, man, this really makes me want to do something, to contribute."
  • Feel very invigorated by the speech especially at the end of the speech, it really makes the audience want to do or to contribute something.
